Clean Sweep!

8th graders study surface area and volume as they utilize newly learned skills to fabricate their very own dustpan.

As a result of this lab, students will know and understand these things: (1) Unit cost calculations; (2) Ratios and proportions; (3) Percentages and the development of an understanding for percents greater than 100; (4) Revenue, expenses, and profit; (5) Characteristics of rectangular and triangular prisms; (6) Surface area of regular two-dimensional shapes; (7) Surface area of irregular two-dimensional shapes; (8) Volume of rectangular prisms; (9) Volume of triangular prisms; (10) Volume of irregular three-dimensional shapes; (11) Basic plotting features of a graphing calculator; (12) Initial conceptual understanding of the use of variables in the representation of mathematical situations; (13) The use of symbolic algebra to solve problems; (14) The use of graphs to represent and explain numerical and algebraic relationships; (15) Introduction to equations with two variables; (16) The use of substitution to transform equations with two or three variables into a single equation with one independent variable; (17) Optimization problems and how to recognize maximum and/or minimum values; and (18) Points in a coordinate plane.
